Sometime in the past, I used to struggle to get things done. At the beginning of a work week, I would tell myself the things I needed to get done, and then start off the week.

However, I kept getting frustrated and disappointed at the end of every week, when I couldn’t effectively complete the tasks I had originally set out to do.

And so, without waiting for the prodding or nudging of any external sources, I knew I needed to fix that.

I knew I needed to do something significant to improve my productivity and get more work done, both at home and at the office.

And so I made changes. I wouldn’t lie, but initially, these changes felt like a lot to stomach. But once I became used to them, I saw my productivity improve, because I started getting a lot of stuff done in less time.

But you have to be willing to make some small changes, and in no time you will stop bothering about all the things you need to get done.

Because, you will find that you are accomplishing way more than you used to, before making the changes. Let’s dive right in.

Productivity Enhancing Tips

  1. Make a list. This is one of the easiest, but significant factors that can enhance your productivity. I used to go about my activities pretending that I had all of “it” in ‘my head’. That’s a big mistake we sometimes make. Why do you go to the grocery store with a list of all the things you want to buy? It’s because the tendency to forget is real. Without having a list handy, you may not remember that the gallon of milk is almost exhausted or that the cat food has only one serving left. In the same vein, to enhance your productivity, make it a habit to list out all the things you have to accomplish for the week, day or month, depending on your schedule. That way, you not only avoid the pain of forgetting to do something very important, but it also helps you keep track of what is left to be accomplished. Which keeps you focused and on task until your list is completely crossed out.
  2. Avoid distractions while you set out to accomplish your list. In this age of the internet and social media, one of the biggest distractions which impact our productivity is social-media/internet over-indulgence. A recently released study shows that globally, we spend an average of 135 minutes per day on social media This is minus the time we spend to do other things online, such as shopping, checking emails, etc. So how do you avoid the distracting effects of the internet and social media? One thing I frequently do is to keep my cell phone on silent (not vibration) mode, and away from me while working on set tasks. I hide it away from sight, either stuck in my bag or locked up in my drawer. And I gradually trained myself not to get tempted to go check it once in a while until I finish up a task. This point I believe is one of the most important that would help you become more productive if you are disciplined enough to stick to it. I was amazed at the results I got once I first tried it out, I couldn’t believe I could achieve so much in the time that I did. It was a lot of sacrifice for me, but I must say that the gains have been significantly astronomical.How to improve your productivity.Pic3
  3. Don’t try to multi-task. Just stick to the original plan. Multi-tasking is one big killer of productivity. Because, according to research reported by the American Psychological Association, workplace productivity is actually diminished by 40%, when people multi-task across various activities. I used to do this a lot without knowing that it was making me less productive, than actually more productive. I would be jumping between one uncompleted task and the other, and spend so much time actually completing a specific task until I learned to do better. So, to enhance your productivity, try to finish a given task first, before moving on to the next and you will be amazed at how much you get done within a shorter period of time.
  4. Don’t worry about all your many problems. Sometimes, while working on something, we may find our minds wandering away, thinking about all the other ‘many’ problems that we need to take care of. Doing that only lengthens the amount of time we spend working on specific tasks. I am also guilty of this because sometimes, I just sit and begin to wonder about all the many things I need to get done. I mean, we are all humans and have different issues to take care of. But, don’t allow one challenging situation prevent you from achieving what can be accomplished now. All your problems would be taken care of, as long as you have the courage never to give up.

You can improve your productivity by making some small changes to your life. However, you will find that after making those changes, you will get more accomplished without even thinking about them.
