Do Not Be Intimated by Job Requirements And Descriptions

At one point or the other in our lives, we probably have been there. We have had times where we were searching for jobs, looking for greener pastures or just desirous to give our families the best. We probably were turned off from applying for certain positions just because we weren’t conversant with the job requirements. We considered ourselves ‘unqualified’ and therefore turned the other way.

I too have been there. I have been in situations where I automatically disqualified myself because I considered myself ‘unfit’ for some roles. Why? because, I didn’t meet all the requirements. I didn’t have some of the required skills, and so, as usual, I just turned away. If you are in that situation now, wondering to yourself; “I don’t even have all the required skills”, or “I don’t meet the requirements for this role, because I am not familiar with what is needed”, then this post is for you.

Do NOT be intimidated by job descriptions and requirements. Personally, my advice is, If you meet 50% of the requirements for that job, just go ahead and apply for it, Because I can guarantee you that no one out there has 100 % of what is required, unless of course by back-door connections. But that being said, do not limit yourself based on what some recruiters have written out as what is required. I know so, because I have been there.

I remember when I didn’t get a job I interviewed for and had even surpassed the requirements. However, my would-be peers weren’t comfortable with my skills even when the interview with the hiring Manager had gone very well.  So, I was passed over for that role. To put it mildly, I had felt very bad. I felt bad because I knew I had been passed over for some intangible reasons. But that is not where the story ends.

Although I had felt bad, I decided to apply for a much higher position within that same organization, in another Department.  And you know how they say, “every disappointment is a blessing in disguise?” There is so much truth in that statement. Because, that was the job I finally got.

Job descriptions and requirements are set to streamline the hiring process, not for you to automatically disqualify yourself. I would say it again, if you meet 50% of the requirements for a job, just go ahead and apply for it, because you may never know! Plus there is also a thing as ‘on-the-job training’. You can acquire all the skills, knowledge and competencies you need to succeed, as you go ahead on the job.

So, never rule out possibilities, and never set the red tape for yourself. If you meet 50% of that job requirement, just go ahead and apply for it, because, anything is indeed possible!

To your continued success. Cheers!!!

Congratulations on the position and you are right. Even if it does not seem to be within your abilities, you may have enough for a good start.
