We all have dreams; aspirations that we only wished could happen now! We have visions of where we would want to be or get to in life. But, if you are not doing anything about having the kind of life you desire, those dreams and aspirations may only end up in one place- in dream land.
There are so many reasons people are not living their “dream” life; and a lot of it depends on factors inherently dependent on the person involved. If you really want to start living, or at least working towards living the life of your cherished dreams, then you must fix some things that have to do with YOU! Here, I share 6 major reasons; so many people are not living the lives that they want.
1.Regrets or being hinged in the past. This is life, and the odds that you may have encountered one form of disappointment or failure is high. Life is filled with twists and turns, but only the wise and skillful are able to navigate through its contours, coming out stronger and as better individuals. If you continue to hold on to past failures or disappointments, you may not be prepared to start another chapter of your life. And that may be a key reason why you are tardy or behind schedule, in advancing towards your goals. It is time to leave the issues of the past, in the past and move on.
2. Fear of the Unknown. As humans, uncertainties make us uncomfortable. The fear of what is behind the door, or on the other side of the river, scares us to our spines. We always want clarity and a certain degree of certainty about desired ventures, before going ahead. But that type of approach may only keep you glued to one spot, and you may never advance beyond what your senses can relate to. If you must break boundaries and burn bridges in the pursuit of your goals, it is time to take a leap of faith, and begin your journey. Just do your best, and leave the rest. Everything else will fall into place. According to Eleanor Roosevelt,
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”- Eleanor Roosevelt
3. Fear of Failure. This is one easy steal of people’s destinies. Fear of failure. We are plagued by different questions, “what if this does not work?”, “what if all my efforts become wasted in the process?”, “I have never failed before, what if I fail now?” It is time to quit asking these questions, and just do what you have to do. Failure is a part of the equation on the journey towards achieving your goals; but when you do fail, learn the important lessons, pick up yourself and move on.
4. Lack of Responsibility. Sometimes, we unknowingly may not be taking responsibility for our lives. According to: “the world owes you nothing”. You alone are responsible for your actions, as well as the things you do towards fulfilling your purpose on this planet. Stop waiting for or listening to others to tell you how to live your life. Set your own goals, and be confident of the actions you take towards achieving them. Also, be ready to embrace the outcome or results of your decisions, good or bad. That’s also a good sign of maturity.
5.Talking to the Wrong People. This is another subtle manipulator, which keeps people behind schedule in achieving their dreams. Sometimes you may actually be talking to the wrong people about your goals and dreams. People who may be generally unmotivated about life or who may have even failed trying to achieve their own life’s goals. Or people who unknown to you may be envious or jealous of you, through no fault of yours. Or at the very extreme, naysayers. Those who would discourage you out of your goals. In your pursuit for success, be careful about those you talk to. Be careful about the ones you turn to for help or advice. These people are everywhere all around us. They are our families, friends, neighbors, colleagues, coworkers, bosses, social contacts, etc. Critically appraise the dimensions of your goals, and if someone has no bearing or service offering in helping you achieve them, then it is better to keep them away from the dream.
6. Procrastination. I hate this one, because I believe we have all fallen victims to it at some point or the other. Procrastination deceives you that there would be a better time to achieve the goal in the future. That is a lie, and you shouldn’t fall for it. It’s better to do that which you have to do NOW! You do not need to wait for things to become a particular way, before you do what you are supposed to do. Just do it. Remember that time wasted, cannot be regained. Rather than waiting for the rainy day, create your own rain by getting water at the well or tap, and pouring it on yourself! In the words of George Herbert,
“Do Not Wait; the time will never be ‘Just Right.’ Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along.”- George Herbert
In wrapping this up, I hope you will do the right thing and make the move toward advancing towards your goals. Remember, knowledge is power. The year is still early, with us in its first weeks. You can still make good on your plans, to tell a better story of your life at the end of the year. The choice is yours, and I am rooting for you because I know that your name would soon be mentioned amongst the list of successful people! You can do it!
To your continued success. Cheers!!!
