Life Lessons from the New England Patriots vs. Pittsburgh Steelers football game (December 17th, 2017)

Life is a beautiful journey, filled with lessons designed to help us navigate through it with the confidence and attitudes of victors; not victims. Wherever we find ourselves, and whatever happens around us, there are salient points embedded along every route. However, the ability to glean through these facts, to discover the subtle lessons communicated per time, is one of the principal factors that distinguish successful people, from the ‘not-too-successful’ ones.

Full disclosure: I am a huge fan of the New England Patriots and have closely followed their games this season, as they try to make another appearance, at next year’s super bowl competition-the biggest sporting event of the year in America. Their last game with the Pittsburgh Steelers on December 17th, 2017, taught me some very important life lessons, and as always, I am very excited to share them with you.

I wouldn’t bore you with too many details, but suffice it to say that it was a very tough game, played by 2 very outstanding teams. After nearly 3 hours of dedicated play, with the Pittsburgh Steelers maintaining a 24-16 lead over the New England Patriots, it seemed like their game to win in the last few minutes of the match. However, when hopes had already dwindled for my team to turn the tables around, Tom Brady put back the smiles on our faces. He delivered an awesome touchdown in the last 4 minutes of the game, bringing the scores to 27-24; this time in the Patriots favor. At this point, I personally thought the game was over, and had been so excited for my team, and became a little bit distracted with other chores, when the inevitable suddenly happened.quarterback-73614_1920.pngRight before our eyes, we saw the Pittsburgh Steelers pull a fast one on the New England Patriots, by balling a touch-down that was later ruled an incomplete pass, and subsequently disallowed in the final seconds of the match. And all of a sudden, the Steelers short-lived victory which had been delivered into their hands was immediately taken away. That match ended 27-24 in the Patriots favor, and thus sealed the victory for my team. As shaky as I was over the surprising come back and win by my team, I could not help but digest some key life lessons from that breath-taking game:

  1. It is not over, until it is finally over. There is a significant difference between, “I am almost there”, and “I am there”. Even if you can see the finish line, don’t ever quit until you finally cut through that tape. And you must gather all your strength for the last lap of the game, which may actually be the toughest. Don’t give up; don’t slacken down; don’t relax just yet. Wait until you get there before you take off your boots.
  2. Opportunity doesn’t come but once, it presents itself multiple times. The Patriots could have concluded that they had lost the game, following the surprising steal by the Steelers in the last few minutes of the game. But after the touch-down by the Steelers was ruled incomplete, the Patriots seized on the opportunity that was presented to them again, and turned the game around in their favor. If you miss an opportunity, or if an opportunity eludes you, don’t fret too much about it. Instead, get up and dust yourself and pull yourself together, and get ready for another opportunity, because, it will surely come.
  3. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. The New England Patriots, in my opinion took things for granted in the last few minutes of the game, when they assumed they had won. And so what happened? The defense somewhat became lax, and that is how they almost allowed the Steelers pull an embarrassing win over them. Whatever it is you are doing, do it well with all your heart, if you want to get the desired results. Otherwise, you may soon find yourself walking on eggshells just like the New England Patriots did, in the final seconds of that game.
  4. Never rest on your oars, until you hear the final whistle. Even if you can see it from a distance, do not take the risk of taking a break until you eventually achieve your goals. Put in the same efforts you did at the outset, until you get to the end of the goal. You do not want to be taken unawares by an unintended or unanticipated outcome, just because you took some time off to get some pizza!

To wrap this up, the actualization of your dream is in your own hands. Stay focused, on target and in character, until you get to the finish line, and actually cut through that tape!

To your continued success. Cheers!!!
